Common questions

How do I know if therapy is right for me?+

You don’t need a diagnosis or a crisis to come to therapy. If something is weighing on you, repeating, or hard to talk about elsewhere, that is reason enough. A free initial phone call is a low-pressure way to explore whether it feels like the right fit.

What happens in the first session?+

Mostly listening. I’ll ask what brings you here and what you would like to be different, and explain confidentiality and how we can work together.

How long will I need to come?+

That varies. Some people work on a specific issue over eight to twelve sessions; others choose longer, open-ended work. We review it together as we go.

Is what I say confidential?+

Yes, within the limits of the IACP code of ethics. The narrow exceptions include serious risk of harm or disclosure required by law. Clinical work is discussed in professional supervision without identifying clients.

Is online therapy effective?+

For most people working on the difficulties I see, online therapy can be effective. If it is not working for you, we can discuss changing the arrangement.

Do you work with under-18s or couples?+

Not at present. I work individually with adults aged 18 and over.

What does working towards IACP accreditation mean?+

I am a qualified counsellor and psychotherapist, professionally insured, and building the supervised clinical experience required for accreditation. I attend regular professional supervision and work in line with the IACP’s ethical framework.
